User Research

UX/UI Designer

With so many new concepts and terms to learn and internalize, it can feel overwhelming. That’s where VocabMaster comes in. It’s a tool designed to assist with learning new vocabulary, whether it’s a new language or a specialized set of terms and their meanings.

From competitive analysis and user research to creating personas and delivering the final product, the process always begins and ends with the users. It starts with gathering data through interviews and tests to identify the core problem. Before design concepts even come into play, understanding the users through personas and brainstorming potential solutions is essential. Once features are developed to address the problem, the cycle of ideation and usability testing begins to refine and perfect the design.

Empathizing with Users

First, how do we put ourselves in our users' shoes? One important way, is by creating user personas.

User Persona

User personas help us to understand our target audience, fostering empathy and guiding user-centered design decisions. Below is a user persona I created based on the data collected of potential users of VocabMaster. This is a fantastic way to find the problem a user is facing.

We gathered alot of data from the interviews, personas, and information architecture. Which lead us to the big question. What does a vocabulary app needs to help users learn new vocabulary quickly and efficiently? And what does that solution look like?

Lets get to the drawing board, literally!

USABILITY TESTING

Conducting Usability Test

After recruiting 3 participants, I then ask general questions, these questions are mandatory for introduction and serves as an ice breaker (questions exploring participants background and interests ). For each participant I test a total of 4 direct tasks. To help the user be able to understand the given task, a scenario is presented. Below are a few notes out of many of any interesting findings as the participants navigate each task through each scenario.

Iteration is essential to UX design, below are designs before modifications and after. As a UX designer the process of re-iterating designs through gathered data from users is what user-centric solutions is all about.

Project Conclusion

Lily, 20, Preschool Teacher

“when I feel like I forgotten a few stuff I like to go back start from the beginning, then I text myself”

“Something that less time consuming, when creating the flashcards”

“A mixture of education and fun that has a reminder a reminder. It Make sure I’m having fun, learn at the same time.”

Valuable Insights

Dahi-I avoid learning apps that have a timer. Having to quickly do something within a short time takes my focus away from learning I feel frustrated when I have less time to absorb and make sense in information”

Lily-”I find learning apps that make learning fun. I think if learning is fun It will be more engaging thus retain more information. I feel more willing to engage in learning if I know its going to be an enjoyable experience “
